What is Dark Energy?

We know since Hubble's work in the 20s that the Universe is expanding, in agreement with the results of Einstein's General Relativity. In 1998, two groups of cosmologists discovered that this expansion is accelerating, after a long epoch of decelerated expansion in the past. The leaders of these two groups received the Nobel Prize for this discovery in 2011. To explain the acceleration, cosmologists proposed the idea of a new substance, called Dark Energy, that drives the expansion, winning over ordinary matter and dark matter, that can only slow it down.
This book explains the theories and observations that support the idea of Dark Energy. The intended audience for ths book is advanced physics students and researchers. It includes more than 40 problems and can be used as a companion textbook for a course on cosmology.

The authors are Luca Amendola, currently at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and Shinji Tsujikawa, currently at the Tokyo University of Sciences, Japan.
